Kehlani entered the music scene in 2014 upon the release of her independent mixtape, Cloud 19. The mixtape was released digitally and featured the lead single, “FWU.” Although the record didn’t enter the mainstream charts, it was highly acclaimed by critics. Pitchfork published a feature titled 50 Best Albums of 2014, where Cloud 19 was ranked at number 28. After her debut release, Kehlani dropped another mixtape, You Should Be Here, which debuted at number 35 on the Billboard 200, number 5 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and number 2 on Top R&B Albums charts. After catching the attention of record labels with her critically-acclaimed mixtapes, Kehlani signed with Atlantic Records and went on to work on her first studio album.
In January 2017, Kehlani released their debut album, SweetSexySavage. The record topped Billboard’s R&B chart and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200. The record spawned the platinum hit songs “Crzy,” “Distraction,” and “Gangsta.” Three years later, Kehlani dropped her follow-up album, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t. The sophomore studio album topped the R&B chart and peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. Featuring guest artists such as Tyga, Tony Lanez, James Blake, and more, the record was preceded by singles, “Can I,” “F&MU,” “Toxic,” and “Everybody’s Business.”
Kehlani recently released her latest album, Blue Water Road, with much-critical acclaim. The third studio effort features guest performances from Justin Bieber, Blxst, Thundercat, and more. The thirteen-track album was praised for its delicate warmth and for being Kehlani’s most groundbreaking album.
