For a song to be used as the movie title track or main theme song of a John Hughes film says a lot about how this band made a huge impact among Gen-Xers and created a notable influence in the current generation's sound. Psychedelic Furs, with their rather unique name, is considered one of the front-runners of the so-called New British invasion, which sound was classified under the New Romantics or New Wave movement. Their 1980-released self-titled debut album found success in the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Australia, and Germany. Yet it was not until the release of their sophomore album "Talk Talk Talk" in 1981, that Psychedelic Furs achieved their first transatlantic hits with the singles "Dumb Waiters" and the original version of "Pretty in Pink". The latter then caught the ears of legendary director-producer John Hughes, and "Pretty In Pink" was re-recorded by Psychedelic Furs which became part of the platinum-selling OST of the now-iconic teen flick. At the heels of this rousing global success, the band further solidified their position as hitmakers as they released the massive chart-topping singles "The Ghost in You" and "Heaven", which dominated college and modern rock radio stations.
Another band that made waves at the height of the 80s British invasion was The Jesus and Mary Chain. They are a Scottish alt-rock band cited as pivotal to the shoegaze post-punk movement. Known for their seminal hits like “Just Like Honey,” “Happy When It Rains,” “April Skies,” “Sometimes Always,” and “Head On,” The Jesus and Mary Chain is still at the top of their game as they celebrate their 40th year anniversary this year, 2024. The Jesus and Mary Chain is said to be a band that has written songs for the misfits and the outsiders. Currently, co-founder Jim Reid still upholds that same sentiment as he says: “Absolutely. Never fit in anywhere, that’s just the way it is with us. For years I used to think, ‘well, fuck it, how come we never seem to be invited to the party?’ Then after a while I just thought, ‘Fuck the party. We’re the party.’ That’s it. We’re allowed to do this thing, and that’s good enough for me.”
